Occupation
Occupation describes the kind of work the person does on the job. For employed people, the data refer to the person's job during the reference week. For those who worked at two or more jobs, the data refer to the job at which the person worked the greatest number of hours. Some examples of occupational groups shown in this product include managerial occupations; business and financial specialists; scientists and technicians; entertainment; healthcare; food service; personal services; sales; office and administrative support; farming; maintenance and repair; and production workers.

Occupied housing unit
A housing unit is classified as occupied if it is the usual place of residence of the person or group of people living in it at the time of enumeration.

Offshore Areas
Areas that are seaward of the coastal line for the United States. Within the 1997 Economic census, the census of mineral industries presents some statistics on petroleum and natural gas industries for selected offshore areas (as well as by State).

Oklahoma Tribal Statistical Area (OTSA)
Statistical entities identified and delineated by federally recognized American Indian tribes in Oklahoma that formerly had a reservation but do not now have a reservation in that state. The boundary of an OTSA will be that of the former reservation in Oklahoma, except where modified by agreements with neighboring tribes for statistical data presentation purposes. They may cross the boundary of Oklahoma and include territory in a neighboring state but not territory in any reservation. Replaces the Tribal Jurisdiction Statistical Areas (TJSAs) of 1990.

Old age dependency ratio
A measure derived by dividing the population 65 years and over by the 18 to 64 years population and multiplying by 100. (American Community Survey and Population Estimates Program)

Operating expenses
In the Economic Census Wholesale Trade, this term includes: payroll; employee benefits; interest; rent; payroll taxes; cost of supplies used for operation; depreciation expenses; fundraising expenses; contracted or purchased services; and other expenses charged to operations.

Operating expenses exclude: outlays for the purchase of real estate; construction and all other capital improvements; funds invested; assessments or dues paid to the parent or other chapters of the same organization; fundraising organizations; and funds transferred to charities and other.

Other business receipts
In the Economic Census Construction Sector, other business receipts include the receipts for all other business activities done by an establishment in the current year. Includes business receipts not reported as value of construction work. This includes business receipts from retail and wholesale trade, rental of equipment without operator, manufacturing, transportation, legal services, insurance, finance, rental of property and other real estate operations, and other non-construction activities. Receipts for separately definable architectural and engineering work for others are also included here. Excluded is non-operating income such as interest, dividends, the sale of fixed assets, or receipts from other business operations in foreign countries.

Other expenses
In the Economic Census Manufacturing Sector, Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) establishments were requested to provide information on the cost of expenses for the repair and maintenance services of buildings and/or machinery; communication services; legal services; accounting, auditing, and bookkeeping services; advertising and promotional services; expensed computer hardware and supplies and purchased computer services; refuse removal services; management consulting and administrative services; taxes and license fees; and all other expenses. Each of these items reflects the costs paid directly by the establishment and excludes salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services. These expenses are normally considered as non-production related costs purchased from other companies.

Included in the cost of other expenses for the repair and maintenance of buildings and/or machinery are payments made for all maintenance and repair work on buildings and equipment. Included are payments made to other establishments of the same company for these services and for repair and maintenance of any leased property. Excluded are extensive repairs or reconstruction that was capitalized, which is considered capital expenditures; costs incurred directly by the establishment in using its own work force to perform repairs and maintenance work; and repairs and maintenance provided by the building or machinery owner as part of the rental contract.

Included in the cost of other expenses for communication services is the actual expense incurred or payable during the year for any type of communication. Types of communication include telephone, data transmission, telegraph, Internet, connectivity, FAX, telex, photo transmission, paging, cellular telephone, on-line access and related services, etc.

Included in the cost of other expenses for legal services are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment. Excluded are the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Included in the cost of other expenses for accounting, auditing, and bookkeeping services are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment. Excluded are the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Included in the cost of other expenses for advertising and promotional services are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment. Included are payments for printing, media coverage, and other services and materials. Excluded are the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Included in the cost of other expenses for expensed computer hardware and supplies and purchased computer services are actual expenses incurred or payable during the year. Included are purchases for computer hardware and supplies, computer services (software, data transmission, processing services, web design, etc.). Excluded are services provided by other establishments of the same company (such as a separate central data processing unit).Included in the cost of other expenses for refuse removal services are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment, including costs for hazardous waste removal or treatment. Excluded are all costs included in rental payments or as capital expenditures and the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Included in the cost of other expenses for management consulting and administrative services are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment. Excluded are the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Included in the cost of other expenses for taxes and license fees are payments made to other companies for these services which were paid directly by the establishment, excluding income, sales, payroll, and excise taxes. Also excluded are the salaries paid to employees of the establishment for these services.

Other relative
Any household member related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption, but not specifically included in any other relationship category. Can include grandchildren, parents, in-laws, cousins, etc.

Own children
A child under 18 years old who is a son or daughter by birth, marriage (a stepchild), or adoption. For 100-percent tabulations, own children consist of all sons/daughters of householders who are under 18 years of age. For sample data, own children consist of sons/daughters of householders who are under 18 years of age and who have never been married, therefore, numbers of own children of householders may be different in these two tabulations.

Owner-occupied housing unit
A housing unit is owner occupied if the owner or co-owner lives in the unit even if it is mortgaged or not fully paid for.
